In the world of modern electronics, circuit boards face constant threats — moisture, dust, chemicals, vibration and temperature extremes. Whether you manufacture LED lighting, automobile ECUs, industrial controllers, or consumer electronics, a single corroded trace can mean costly product failure. This is where PCB conformal coating steps in as your first and most reliable line of defence.

What Is PCB Conformal Coating?

PCB conformal coating — also called circuit board varnish, PCB lacquer, protective lacquer, circuit board sealant or IPC-CC-830 coating — is a thin polymeric film applied to a printed circuit board assembly (PCBA). The coating "conforms" to the contours of the board, covering components, solder joints, leads and exposed copper traces.

Other internationally used names include:

  • PCB lacquer / circuit board lacquer — common in European manufacturing
  • PCB varnish / protective varnish — used in UK, Australia, Germany (Leiterplattenversiegelung)
  • Printed circuit board sealant — defence and industrial sectors
  • Conformal protective coating / conformal protective lacquer
  • Sơn phủ PCB — Vietnamese term | 基板コーティング — Japanese term

Why Is Conformal Coating Necessary?

Electronic assemblies are vulnerable to multiple environmental threats simultaneously:

  • Moisture & condensation → corrosion, leakage current and short circuits
  • Fungal growth → degrades insulation in tropical/humid environments (critical in Vietnam, India, SE Asia)
  • Chemical exposure → flux residue, cleaning agents, industrial gases
  • Vibration & mechanical stress → cracking solder joints and component damage
  • High-voltage arcing → corona discharge, dielectric breakdown
  • Ionic contamination → dendritic growth causing PCB short circuits

Conformal coating addresses all of these risks simultaneously — making it mandatory in automotive, aerospace, industrial, LED lighting, and outdoor electronics.

Application Methods

1

Clean First

Always clean the PCB with Elclean E-Clean Spray or Elclean Liquid before applying any conformal coating. Flux residues and ionic contamination prevent adhesion and cause premature failure.

2

Brush Coating

Manual application — ideal for low-volume production, prototypes and rework. Best for targeted area coating. Gives good control but slower than spray.

3

Spray Coating

Using aerosol or the CONINS External Dispensing Spray Pump — faster, more uniform than brushing. Ideal for medium production volumes.

4

Dip Coating

Full board immersion — excellent for high-density boards. Provides complete coverage of all surfaces and components.

5

Cure in Oven

Cure all Acrylcoat products at 80°C for 60 minutes. Full optimum properties develop after 7 days. Inspect under UV lamp — Acrylcoat fluoresces for easy coverage verification.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PCB conformal coating?
PCB conformal coating is a thin protective polymer film applied to printed circuit board assemblies to protect them from moisture, dust, chemicals, fungus, vibration and electrical arcing. It conforms to the shape of all components and traces on the board.
What are the main types of conformal coating?
The five main types are: Acrylic (AR) — most popular, easy rework; Silicone (SR) — best for extreme temperatures up to 200°C; Urethane (UR) — strong chemical resistance; Epoxy (ER) — very hard, industrial; Parylene — superior protection via chemical vapour deposition.
Which conformal coating is best for Vietnam's tropical climate?
For tropical humid climates (Vietnam 80–95% RH), G2 or G3 rated coatings are recommended. CONINS Acrylcoat ALQ-100 and the dedicated G1/G2/G3 Compliance Coating are designed for these environments and have been tested to IEC 60068 humidity standards.
How long does conformal coating last on a PCB?
A properly applied and cured CONINS Acrylcoat coating can last the lifetime of the PCB — typically 10–25 years depending on environment. The liquid coating shelf life is 12 months in original sealed containers stored below 40°C.
Can conformal coating be removed for PCB rework?
Yes. All CONINS Acrylcoat coatings can be removed with Elclean Thinner AR solvent, making component replacement and rework straightforward — a major advantage over silicone or epoxy type coatings which are difficult or impossible to rework.
Does CONINS Pune export conformal coating to Vietnam?
Yes. CONINS Pune regularly exports Acrylcoat conformal coatings to Vietnam (HCMC and Hanoi), Germany, USA, Malaysia, Thailand, UAE and 20+ countries. Contact us on WhatsApp +91-95455-91323 or email response@pcbconformalcoating.net for export pricing and samples.
